From your acting President:

Hello from the Sangre de Cristo Ranches, and welcome to Fall!  The aspen have turned a beautiful gold and make a remarkable picture against the mountains.  The days are cooler, and so far we have had two snowfalls in the high country.  Both melted at the end of September leaving the mountains bare.

There have been some very positive changes for the Ranches since August.  Costilla County has hired Officer Andy Espinoza as the new Code Enforcement Officer.  His job "in a nutshell" is to clean up Costilla County, including the Ranches.  Although he has been on the job only a short time, I have witnessed at least four lot clean-ups. He is really putting some teeth and hard work into his job.  The Ranches thank him for his efforts and success. If you wish to report what might be a "problem", Officer Espinoza can be reached at 719-672-9109.

Officer Conrad Albert, the Colorado Parks & Wildlife Manager in Costilla County, has been spending some time cruising the Ranches also. My husband and I met him and his trusty dog at the very tip-top of Joy Road (11,000 ft.) on the southeast side. He was looking for poachers, illegal tree cutters, and anything else that might interest his dog!  SCRO thanks both of these men for helping us keep the Ranches beautiful for all to enjoy.

The new SCRO Board has been busy working together and addressing the priorities of the Ranch owners.  We wish to thank all the former SCRO Board members for helping to make our transition as smooth as possible.

One of the projects that we are working on is the website.  Many of the Ranch owners who do not live in the Ranches would like to learn more about the permit process, building on their lots, living in the Ranches, and other areas of interest.  Our primary means of getting this information out is through the website.  With that in mind, the Board is looking to outsource the website to a third party.  We believe this will ease transitions between outgoing and incoming board members in the future.  While we are soliciting bids and reviewing proposals we have added a few new pages, updated a few photos, and added our email address and phone number to all the pages.

The new Board wishes to serve the all the landowners in the Ranches and in light of that, we appreciate feedback, positive or negative.  Feel free to email us at info@sdcro.com.

Again, we on the Board thank you for your confidence in us for the upcoming year.

Adopt A Highway Cleanup
Saturday, October 27, 2012
9:00 am to noon

There were 7 Ranch owners present. Every one pitched in and we cleaned up both sides of approximately 2 miles of Hwy 160, from the Trinchera Ranch Entrance to the middle of Ft. Garland. The day was brisk, with the weather clear and sunny. I noticed that all had bundled up for a chilly time, but as the work commenced, the coats and hats began to come off. We collected about 30 bags of trash for the DOT to pick up, and in just a little over 2 hours! Wow! What effort all put forth.

As I collected trash, I thought about the importance of leaving garbage in the car and taking it home to throw away. In a moment, something is carelessly thrown out a window and forgotten. Many of the things I picked up could be very dangerous to the wildlife that lives in the area. Next time you are drinking a soda or munching on something, when you finish, please be respectful of the earth we live on. Dispose of it responsibly.

I wish to thank the following for their time in this service project:

Brandon and Jenna Van Houten
Nick Sarriento and Marie Pacheco
Lanny and Deanna McDonald
